The Biblical Ministry of a Watchman
In the Bible, a watchman was called by God to “watch” – to stay awake and essentially perform what the military calls “guard duty”. Soldiers on guard duty are stationed along the perimeter of the camp to protect the force; to provide security and early warning against impending danger. Long before telecommunications, the watchman would bring word of what he saw or heard to the army or to the nation (2 Sam. 18:24).
The watchman would “watch and pray” (Mat. 26:41; Mark 13:33), meaning pray intercessory prayers, as the Lord leads, for God’s people, for the nations, and for the advancement of God’s kingdom, will, and purposes in the earth...
